'N Sync singer makes a splash in Hollywood

Cue ear-splitting shrieks from millions of preteen girls. For Lance Bass, as most adults don’t know, is one-fifth of ‘N Sync, the mega-selling boy-band that has helped keep the music industry afloat in recent years. It’s hard to imagine ‘N Sync winning a Grammy Award for its lightweight pop. So – strange but true – Bass is setting his sights on winning a coveted Academy Award from stuffy Hollywood for his role as a moonlighting movie producer. The 22-year-old Mississippi native set up a movie production company earlier this year, naming it A Happy Place, and is holding meetings like… Read more »

Virgin Records vice chairman Nancy Berry, the estranged wife of ousted music executive Ken Berry, Tuesday became the latest casualty of a restructuring at ailing British music company EMI Group Plc, where the couple reigned over rock ‘n’ roll for several years. Alain Levy, who abruptly replaced Ken Berry as chief executive officer of EMI’s recorded music division last week, announced Tuesday that Nancy Berry will leave Virgin immediately after more than two decades at the EMI unit. The news, which was not a surprise to many industry insiders, broke as Virgin prepares to release key albums in coming weeks… Read more »

Stars, rescuers rock in N.Y. concert tribute

Paul McCartney, Billy Joel and Elton John led music stars honoring the victims and rescue workers of the World Trade Center attack in a concert that celebrated the energy and pride of New York. Joel tapped into the city’s emotion singing “New York State of Mind,” stirring a crowd at Madison Square Garden that included rows of uniformed police, firefighters and their families dancing, singing and screaming at the more than five-hour gala. Movie stars, including Harrison Ford, Jim Carrey and Meg Ryan, also joined politicians such as former President Clinton and New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani to launch what… Read more »

TV Turns To Michelle Branch, P.O.D., Other Artists To Help Tell The Story

Nurse Abby Lockheart has just been dumped. She is in the middle of the rather painful process of moving her stuff out of her ex-boyfriend’s apartment. And to make matters worse, Cake’s “Short Skirt/Long Jacket,” a song about the things a man is looking for in a woman, is playing on the radio. On “ER,” popular music is becoming a bigger part of the story line with every episode. “It adds something to the show every time we use it,” “ER” supervising producer and writer Scott Gemmill said. “It’s amazing what music can bring to a scene.” There’s a new… Read more »

Grammys show to feature extra security, less flash

Forget Jennifer Lopez’ cleavage or surprises like “Soy Bomb.” Organizers of the 44th annual Grammy Awards on Thursday promised the top honors in music next Feb. 27 at the Staples Center will be a more secure and “meaningful” event following the Sept. 11 attacks, which have shaken the nation and disrupted other award shows like television’s Emmys. “Everything has changed. I think everyone is going to be concerned about a large aggregation of people being shown to many countries around the world,” Grammys chief Michael Greene told reporters at a news conference to announce the music industry award show’s date… Read more »

Ben Folds thrives without Five – Review

A spirited performance and a clear delineation of material Monday helped Ben Folds re-establish himself – and prove the viability of a solo career – without the two musicians who constituted the “Five” in his old band. Songs from the new album “Rockin’ the Suburbs” dominated the first hour of music, save for the tragically comical “Karaoke Superstar,” and after a quick break, Folds took the stage solo for 25 minutes of earlier tunes until joined again by the band for “Song for the Dumped.” Folds, on record and in concert, has proven himself quite proficient with no numbers after… Read more »

RIAA Wants to Hack Your PC

Look out, music pirates: The recording industry wants the right to hack into your computer and delete your stolen MP3s. It’s no joke. Lobbyists for the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) tried to glue this hacking-authorization amendment onto a mammoth anti-terrorism bill that Congress approved last week. An RIAA-drafted amendment would immunize all copyright holders – including the movie and e-book industry – for any data losses caused by their hacking efforts or other computer intrusions “that are reasonably intended to impede or prevent” electronic piracy.         In an interview Friday, RIAA lobbyist Mitch Glazier said… Read more »

Timbaland, Magoo Have 'Another Classic' Ready With Jay-Z, Ludacris

Timbaland has been making noise on the CEO/producer side of things lately with the first act off of his Beat Club imprint, Bubba Sparxxx. Next month, the world will finally get to hear more fruits of his labors as an MC. On November 20, Indecent Proposal, the second LP by Timbaland and his partner in rhyme, Magoo, will finally see the light of day after accumulating dust on the shelf. “I did it a year ago,” Tim said, somewhat flatly, of the album last month. The production impresario, who handled all the work behind the boards for the LP, confided… Read more »

Timbaland, P. Diddy, Neptunes Do It Their Way On Bizkit Remix LP

As Fred Durst says, the title tells it all: New Old Songs. The Neptunes do it all for the nookie, Timbaland tries a mission impossible and P. Diddy shows his way on Limp Bizkit’s upcoming remix album, due in December. Also among the hitmakers who are contributing versions of Bizkit’s songs are DJ Premier and William Orbit – in addition to Limp’s own DJ Lethal, guitarist Wes Borland and Durst. “The remixes are like brand new songs,” Durst said Thursday. “We’re writing our new record, so this is something you can put in your stereos and bump to.” E-40 and… Read more »
