Dashboard Confessional Exits Beck Tour

Dashboard Confessional has left its support slot on Beck’s North American tour, effective immediately. The Chris Carrabba-led group played its final gig on the trek Saturday outside Denver. The move is being chalked up to “circumstances beyond our control” on Dashboard’s official Web site (http://www.dashboardconfessional.com), although sources indicate the band may have left the tour for financial reasons. Fellow support act the Black Keys will remain on the trek through its June 27 conclusion in Irvine, Calif., and will play a longer set in Dashboard’s absence. The move comes amid reports that the tour is not performing nearly as well… Read more »

Pearl Jam Exits Epic

Pearl Jam is walking the long road…away from their longtime label. The grunge-rock survivors have served notice that they’re exiting the Sony-owned Epic Records after fulfilling the terms of its contract. The Seattle quintet quietly announced the split in the Q&A section of its Sony-run Rumour Pit Website. Sandwiched between questions about where the band is playing concerts and whether it will ever play the controversial anti-White House song “Bu$hleaguer” (answer: “Ya never know…”) is the query: “Have Pearl Jam left their record company yet?” The answer is simply “yes.” Pearl Jam has been in the Epic fold since the… Read more »

Eminem Disses Weird Al

The only person who gets to poke fun at Eminem is…himself? That’s the word from Weird Al Yankovic who, despite gaining permission from the rap superstar to parody his hit “Lose Yourself” in a tune called “Couch Potato,” couldn’t convince his Em-inence to let Yankovic do the same in a music video. One would think the hip-hopster would stand up and oblige a comedian who’s made a career out of satirizing the likes of Michael Jackson (“Eat It,” “I’m Fat,”), Madonna (“Like a Surgeon”), Nirvana (“Smells Like Nirvana”) and Coolio (“Amish Paradise”), but the answer was an unequivocal no. While… Read more »

Pearl Jam Offer Club-Show DVD, Will Avoid Bush-Baiting Track On New Dates

As if a live CD of every show on their current tour weren’t enough, Pearl Jam have begun selling a live DVD of a December club gig at the Showbox Theater in Seattle. “Live at the Showbox” is available only on the band’s official Web site and at their concerts and features the full set from a December 6 warm-up for the band’s current world tour. Though it does not have any bonus features, the live disc differs from the group’s extras-laden “Touring Band 2000” DVD thanks to the intimate setting in the 1,000-plus capacity theater. The new DVD boasts… Read more »

Music Industry Fights Piracy on 2 Fronts

Nearly two years after it sued Napster into submission, the recording industry has discovered it’s not enough to try to beat Internet music purveyors whose digital distribution techniques allow copyright violations. It also has to join them. To discourage piracy, the multibillion-dollar industry has in recent months moved beyond lawsuits against file-swapping services. It has employed hacker tactics to flood such sites with bogus files and even taken to suing students who created mini-Napsters on college networks. At the same time, however, the music labels have finally embraced the very online distribution model many had long resisted, one that analysts… Read more »

Pop Artists Make Noise About Media Regulations

A veritable who’s who of the pop music world are urging federal regulators to give the public and lawmakers a chance to review any changes made in the regulations that govern media ownership. In a letter to the Federal Communications Commission, 34 recording artists ranging from Jimmy Buffett to Michael Stipe said the changes should be fully vetted before they win final approval. “A refusal to allow Congress and the public to view and debate your specific proposal would be a tremendous disservice to the American public and the citizens who depend on these media structures for their livelihoods,” the… Read more »

Jam Master Jay Slay Probe Coming Up Empty

The city and music industry have offered more than $60,000 in rewards for information on the slaying of rap legend Jam Master Jay. But nearly six months after his death, the identity of his killer and the motive behind the shooting remain a mystery. New York Police Department sources close to the case concede the investigation has been hampered by dead-end leads and uncooperative witnesses. “No one in that industry wants to be a rat,” said one of the sources, who spoke on condition of anonymity. “We’re not at a standstill,” countered police Lt. Alfred Murphy. “We’re still hopeful.” Some… Read more »

Jackson Said Not to Qualify for Tax Break

Michael Jackson may not be able to beat it when it comes to the tax man. County officials have decided Jackson doesn’t qualify for an agricultural preservation tax break on his Neverland Ranch. The 2002-03 assessed value of Neverland Ranch is $12,292,618, resulting in taxes this year of approximately $13,000, according to the Santa Barbara County Assessor’s Office. Jackson receives a legal tax break because he leases land to a cattle rancher. Without the tax break, the assessed value of the property could be nearly 50 percent higher. Under a state law, property owners are taxed at a lower rate… Read more »
