Tears For Fears Members Writing Together Again

Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith, the principal members of Tears For Fears, have put aside 10 years of bad blood in favor of collaborating together again. The duo separated in 1990 after friction described by Orzabal to LAUNCH as “a boil that was lanced finally, and it was pretty bloody.” But the necessity to keep in touch due to ongoing Tears For Fears business concerns, coupled with mellowing with age by both artists, recently reunited the pair. Orzabal tells LAUNCH, “It was very strange, very strange, indeed. But at the same time you think, ‘Well what the hell am I… Read more »

Lost Beatles TV Show Recording Given To The BBC

A lost 1960s audio recording of the Beatles playfully reviewing rock ‘n’ roll singles and chatting about Elvis Presley on a television program has been presented to the British Broadcasting Corporation. The recording of John Lennon, Paul McCartney and George Harrison speaking on a December 1963 broadcast of the BBC’s “Juke Box Jury” was made by a viewer using reel-to-reel tape, the state broadcaster said Sunday. A BBC spokeswoman said the tape was not of broadcast quality, but was “marvelous to have.” The BBC said it would try to match the recording with a silent film of the same program… Read more »

Backstreet's Back: Tour Resumes With A.J. And Lots Of Love

At the band’s first show since A.J. McLean left a rehabilitation center where he was treated for alcoholism, depression and anxiety, more than 14,000 fans at the Bradley Center welcomed the group back Friday with screams and shouts of “We love you, A.J.” The Backstreeters themselves, however, welcomed A.J. back with Silly String, dousing the mustachioed singer with the sticky stuff, along with hugs, as they wrapped up their first show in almost two months. While that might have been the group’s playful way of saying, “Welcome back, bro,” the Boys did take time out to thank their fans for… Read more »

Ex-Metallica Bassist Jason Newsted Debuts EchoBrain

Former Metallica bassist Jason Newsted made his first live appearance with his new band, EchoBrain, on Sunday, playing an hour-long set of heavy yet melodic rock to close out Nadine’s Wild Weekend, a showcase of Bay Area bands. Newsted left Metallica in January, partly due to a strict policy barring side projects, and he had an air of rebirth about him at the posh Bimbo’s 365 Club. “Playing other types of music with other people always enabled me to play better for Metallica,” Newsted said before the show. “It really kept me fresh to hit that loud stuff, my forte.… Read more »

DMX Determined To Be Top Dog With The Great Depression

The inspiration behind the title of DMX’s upcoming The Great Depression is plain and simple: The author of “Stop Being Greedy” has been telling the people who work with him that after his LP drops on September 25, all the other rappers are going to starve. “You thought I’d let you have this sh-?,” he screams on the album intro, “Sometimes.” “You thought this rap sh- was yours? You muthaf ers done lost your mind!” He calms down just a little to give a shout out to all of his friends and family who have been influential in his life… Read more »

Live Turn Tracks Written In Smelly Locker Rooms Into Aggressive V

He couldn’t have been more eager to talk about Live’s fifth album, V, which comes out September 18. Every time frontman Ed Kowalczyk started to explain the creative process for the disc, though, a Chihuahua circled his feet and yapped noisily. “Will you just shut up?” the singer snapped at the dog, momentarily breaking his Zen-like disposition. “She’s a girl and we fixed her,” he continued. “They say sometimes after you fix them they get all barky.” The animal is one of three dogs that circulate through Kowalczyk’s Los Angeles house, where he lives with his wife, Erin, when he’s… Read more »

Badu, Gray, Scott Sizzle

The seductive R&B star, along with fellow musicians Macy Gray, Jill Scott and Zap Mama, served up five hours of sultry, come-hither jams to a 15,000-plus capacity crowd at the DTE Energy Music Theatre in Clarkston, Michigan, Wednesday. “Ladies, women, bitches, hos, hoochie mamas,” Gray addressed the crowd, “we’re here to celebrate one of the most magnificent, most miraculous, things ever created. We want to celebrate the dick!” With many male audience members covering their faces, Gray then led the women in the house in a chant of, “Dick, dick, dick…” Unrestrained sexuality was the theme of the festival, meant… Read more »

STP, Live Enliven Beer Bash

If last year’s inaugural Rolling Rock Town Fair was the beta edition, this year’s event, billed as Rolling Rock Town Fair 2.0, definitely was an improved version -logistically, at least. Musically, it could be argued that, while Saturday’s headliners Live and Stone Temple Pilots really delivered, they were no match for last year’s Moby and the Red Hot Chili Peppers combo. The daylong event at the Westmoreland Fairgrounds, an hour or so southeast of Pittsburgh (concert traffic notwithstanding), also featured metal-minded modern rockers Deftones, Incubus, Staind, Tantric and Oleander… and, of course, beer. The entire event, in marketing terms, is… Read more »
