Ex-Oasis Drummer's Firing Claim Thrown Out

A founder member of British rock group Oasis has lost his bid to sue the band’s lawyers over his firing because he took too long to start legal action. London’s High Court threw out the claim by drummer Anthony McCarroll that solicitors Statham Gill Davies had negligently handled Oasis’s 1993 recording agreement with Sony, allowing the band to get rid of him instantly without compensation. The judge, awarding summary judgment to the solicitors without the need for a full trial, said McCarroll had failed to bring his claim within the legal limit of six years from the date his cause… Read more »

U.S. Naval Academy Sinks Ships Of Suspected File Sharers

About 100 student computers were seized Thursday by the U.S. Naval Academy on suspicion that they housed unauthorized music and movie files. The computers, which are given to students upon admission, were confiscated while class was in session, according to an academy spokesperson. Illegal possession of copyrighted material is against academy policy and has been a problem since the days of Napster’s widespread popularity a few years ago, said the spokesperson, who added that the offense could carry a punishment as severe as a court-marshal. The U.S. Naval Academy was one of more than 2,300 colleges and universities that were… Read more »

Pearl Jam CD Deals With Mortality

Eddie Vedder has found plenty of material in mortality over the years. His band, Pearl Jam, was born of a heroin overdose more than a decade ago. Rival songwriter Kurt Cobain of Nirvana committed suicide while at the height of popularity. Two of Pearl Jam’s biggest hits, “Jeremy” and “Last Kiss,” deal with teen death. Now comes renewal, an appropriate topic as the lead singer and his bandmates re-emerge from their most proximate shock: the deaths of nine fans trampled during the 2000 Roskilde festival in Denmark. “Riot Act,” released Nov. 12, is Pearl Jam’s first studio album since the… Read more »

Jackson Shows Up Late to Testify

Michael Jackson, who arrived fours hours late to testify in a $21 million lawsuit against him, has asked the judge to delay next week’s scheduled testimony so he can travel to Germany to accept an award. “The award is of deep importance to me, it’s philanthropic,” he told Superior Court Judge Zel Canter. “I’ve done a lot of work for children.” The postponement isn’t the first that Jackson has requested. On Thursday, his second day of testimony, Jackson was granted permission to delay that day’s court appearance by several hours. He arrived Thursday without the surgical mask he had worn… Read more »

New Found Glory, Something Corporate, Finch Energize DC – Review

The lyrics to the song “This Is My Life Story” by MXPX run through my head as I hopelessly scramble to the very back of the line. I left later than I had hoped, got caught up in D.C. traffic, and arrived about 5 minutes before doors were scheduled to open. Once inside, I rush to get as close to the stage as I possible. While mashed between about five teeny boppers and their “boyfriends,” anticipation runs through my bones as I eagerly await the first performance. First up is Further Seems Forever. I was a little skeptical about this… Read more »

Art Garfunkel Focuses on Words

Art Garfunkel (news) freely admits that Paul Simon (news) was the one with the words during their long musical partnership. Now, the 60-year-old performer is trying to break out of that image as he makes his songwriting debut on his new album, “Everything Waits to Be Noticed.” “We have an image of ourselves, and we carry ourselves all through life with some rough sense of ourselves,” Garfunkel told the Daily News of Los Angeles. “I’ve shifted my way to respecting words, respecting what comes out of my mouth, having a little more sobriety in my expression of things.” Songwriter Buddy… Read more »

Feds to Decide on Digital Radio

For generations, radio listeners have contended with static. That may be about to change if backers of digital radio have their way. The technology they want to roll out within a year promises custom news and information at the touch of a button, CD-quality sound for FM broadcasts and an end to AM’s hiss, crackle and pop. The Federal Communications Commission is to decide Thursday whether to allow radio stations to broadcast digital signals and how they should do it. Digital radio could be the biggest update to the medium since the debut of FM in the 1940s, said Ken… Read more »

New Software Quietly Diverts Sales Commissions

Some popular online services are using a new kind of software to divert sales commissions that would otherwise be paid to small online merchants by big sites like Amazon and eToys. Critics call the software parasite-ware and stealware. But the sites that use the software, which is made by nearly 20 companies and used by dozens, say that it is perfectly legal, because their users agree to the diversion. The amounts involved are estimated by those in the industry to have mounted into the hundreds of thousands of dollars and are likely to continue to grow – in part because… Read more »
