Rhode Island Club Owners, Band Fined $100K

Six months after a deadly nightclub fire, the club’s owners and a rock band were fined nearly $100,000 by the federal agency that regulates workplace safety. Legal experts say the move could bolster lawsuits filed after the Feb. 20 blaze, which killed 100 people and injured nearly 200 others at a Great White concert. “It’s not absolute proof of negligence, but it will be used as evidence to illustrate negligence,” said David Yas, editor of Rhode Island Lawyers Weekly. He said that the Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s decision Wednesday “certainly carries some power.” The agency fined Derco LLC, which… Read more »

All-American Rejects Make 'Time Stand Still' With New Single

Subtlety is not a trademark for the All-American Rejects, but neither is specificity. Most of the band’s songs address bad relationships and broken hearts, but details of the scarring experiences are often missing. On the group’s next single, vocalist Tyson Ritter sings, “Life is turned, the day I knew you would leave/ I can barely breathe/ Can you hear me scream?” That’s about as close as the Rejects get to confessional revelation. So what exactly is the tune about? “It’s about 96-beats-per-minute and it’s in the key of C major,” quipped bassist Nick Wheeler in a most unhelpful manner. “It’s… Read more »

New DVD from Dashboard Confessional

Dashboard Confessional packed a brand-new, exclusive DVD with the first 500,000 of the band’s third album, A Mark, A Mission, A Brand, A Scar. Titled Far From Home Movies, the DVD combines stirring footage of Dashboard Confessional’s Chris Carrabba performing solo during his ten-date, two-coast acoustic “residency” this past May with behind-the-scenes glimpses of the band hard at work in the studio, crafting A Mark… with producer Gil Norton (Pixies, Foo Fighters). The performance footage – captured by Maureen Egan, Matthew Barry, and Nick Carrabba – is as raw and immediate as Dashboard Confessional’s earliest recordings. Also showcased are the… Read more »

The Weakerthans Would Prefer If You Didn't Steal Their Record

At the most recent Bionic show in Toronto, I had the pleasure of chatting with guitarist Ian Blurton for a few minutes. Not only does Blurton wail with Bionic, but he’s also got producer credit on the upcoming Weakerthans album, Reconstruction Site. Now, I had enjoyed a few beverages at this point, and I’m not going to try to quote Mr. Blurton, but the general gist was that he was pretty pissed off because the Weakerthans record was leaked onto the Internet well before its release date on August 26. For those of you who went and downloaded the album… Read more »

Lynyrd Skynyrd Cancels Rest Of Tour With Sammy Hagar

The Lynyrd Skynyrd/Sammy Hagar “Party Of A Lifetime” tour has come to an end, as Skynyrd has pulled out of the remaining dates due to guitarist Gary Rossington’s health. Rossington had open-heart surgery in February and was cleared to tour in support of their new album Vicious Cycle. However, Skynyrd dropped some shows in recent days because of Rossington’s medical fatigue, and they’ve now scrapped the rest of the coheadlining tour, after Rossington was diagnosed as having suffered a mild seizure. Rossington has been ordered to take three weeks off to recuperate, and he and Skynyrd should be ready to… Read more »

Ashton Kutcher Punks The Competition At Teen Choice Awards

Ashton Kutcher was the big winner at Saturday’s taping of the Teen Choice Awards, but even his five surfboard trophies couldn’t steal the spotlight from the plethora of unusual appearances at the show. There was Kobe Bryant, accepting the Choice Male Athlete award for the fourth time just four days before his first hearing on sexual assault charges. “I’m going through some dark clouds right now,” he said, thanking his wife and fans for support. There was 5 Cent, and no, that’s not a typo. It was Verne “Mini-Me” Troyer performing his own version of “In Da Club,” adding lines… Read more »

Dashboard Confessional Singer Heals Scars, Stops Singing The Blues On New LP

Anyone who pegs Dashboard Confessional frontman Chris Carrabba as a sad pompadoured sack based on heartbreakers like “Again I Go Unnoticed” and “Screaming Infidelities” should get ready to change their perception of him. His new album, A Mark, a Mission, a Brand, a Scar, portrays the man tagged by many as a poster boy for emo in a mood that contradicts his conventionally accepted disposition. “I’m actually excited about the fact that it’s a happier record,” Carrabba said. “If it dispels those conceptions that I’m like, ultra mopey, that would be great because anybody who’s met me can tell you… Read more »

New Napster a Hybrid of Predecessors

Napster may be long dead, but the name and the “kitty” logo of the pioneer online music-swapping program could return to cyberspace before the year is out. Santa Clara-based Roxio Inc., which owns the rights to the Napster name, plans to shelve its current online music service, pressplay, and roll out Napster 2.0 by Christmas, Chris Gorog, Roxio’s chairman and chief executive, told The Associated Press. Gorog was scheduled to announce details of the venture Monday at the Jupiter Plug.IN Conference & Expo in New York. Software maker Roxio acquired pressplay, a joint venture of Universal Music Group and Sony… Read more »

Michael Jackson Slams ACCOPS Act

Pop legend Michael Jackson on Monday slammed a new bill that seeks prison time for file-swappers, arguing that music fans are the ones who drive the success of the music industry. “I am speechless about the idea of putting music fans in jail for downloading music. It is wrong to illegally download, but the answer cannot be jail,” Jackson said in response to legislation introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives Wednesday by John Conyers (D.-Mich.) and Howard Berman (D.-Calif.) that would make illegal file swapping a felony. The Authors, Consumer and Computer Owners Protection and Security Act of 2003… Read more »

Deftones Not "Morose"

The Deftones aren’t doing much to dispel public opinion that they’re the metallic equivalent of an emo band. They’ve been asked about their love of droopy singers like Morrissey a million times throughout their 15-year career, to the point where it’s a virtual no-no to talk about emotions. Still, as singer Chino Moreno and keyboard/samplist Frank Delgado discuss the band’s self-titled fourth album, they can’t help but mention how feelings were an integral part of its production. “I didn’t really feel much of anything this time around… or so I thought,” says Moreno about the album. “The mood I’ve been… Read more »
