Songs by Sum 41, Alien Ant Farm, Default and Slipknot’s Corey Taylor as well as a collaboration between Jerry Cantrell and members of Nickelback and Saliva are being considered for the upcoming “Spider-Man” movie soundtrack. Sum 41 plan to contribute a Rick Rubin-produced version of “It’s What We’re All About,” and they’re shooting a video for the tune Wednesday (March 20) in their hometown of Toronto, according to an Island Def Jam spokesperson. What was supposed to be a peaceful, private gathering of the West Coast hip-hop community on Thursday turned into a heated four-hour open-mic assembly dominated by two very different sermons: one from Minister Louis Farrakhan and one from Death Row Records founder Marion “Suge” Knight. The last time System of a Down hit Las Vegas, it was on the Pledge of Allegiance Tour with Slipknot. Rocking a stadium is no mean trick. Plenty of bands do stadium tours because they’ve got the audience, but the ability to blow the roof off a 5,000-seat venue doesn’t mean you can knock ’em dead in an arena. Some have done it – get your hands on Cheap Trick’s Live at Budokan and hear the decibels erupt – but many have not. Platonically, Weezer is a band fit for arena rock. R.E.M.’s Peter Buck is once again lining up the side gigs to keep himself occupied while his main group enjoys downtime. The guitarist is currently focusing on the next album by the Minus 5, the guitar-pop group fronted by R.E.M. auxiliary musician Scott McCaughey that counts Buck as its only other official member. Buck will add his touch to songs already recorded by McCaughey and members of acclaimed Chicago band Wilco, according to R.E.M. fan site murmurs.com. A decade after the release of their most popular album, Dirty, dissonant art rockers Sonic Youth are reissuing the disc along with two of their other titles as double-CDs bloated with bonus material. Dirty, Goo (1990) and Daydream Nation (1988) will be issued before summer by Universal with all of the original tracks remastered, along with previously unheard demos, live cuts and B-sides, the band’s publicist said.
