Over the past 24 hours, with a TikTok ban presumably looming on January 19 in the United States, users and creators across the platform have begun turning their attention to and rallying behind Xiaohongshu, a Chinese-developed app also referred to as “REDnote” (and which translates to “little red book”). This sudden spotlight has propelled Xiaohongshu to the No. 1 spot in the Apple App Store’s free social networking category.
For those looking for a new app outside of the Meta-verse to build community, downloading REDnote is simple. Open the Apple app store or Google Play app store, search for “rednote,” and install the app. After the download is complete, open the app and click “login.” When entering your phone number, switch the country to +1 for America, then complete the verification process. If you don’t receive your code, tap “Can’t use pin,” and you’ll be able to be redirected to finish the sign-up with your Apple ID and to fill in your profile details manually.
Xiaohongshu currently boasts a 4.9 out of 5 rating from over 154,000 reviewers. Already a major social media presence in China—where it is described as a “lifestyle platform that inspires people to discover and connect with a range of diverse lifestyles, where over 300 million users every month share their life experiences” for more than 300 million monthly users—Xiaohongshu encourages sharing in a way some find reminiscent of TikTok. Of course, TikTok’s global footprint reaches over 1 billion active monthly users, with 150 million located in the U.S.
