Horror nerds, we are so back. On January 23, the Oscars announced their 2025 nominations. The 97th Academy Awards are set to take place on March 2. Of course, they will honor the likes of nominees including Dune: Part Two, Conclave, and The Substance. Yes, that’s correct. Coralie Fargeat’s original body horror film starring Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley received not one, not two, but five whole nominations.

The Substance is nominated for Best Picture, Lead Actress, Director, Original Screenplay, and Makeup and Hairstyling.

This marks the eighth horror movie to be nominated for Best Picture. Previously, Deliverance, The Exorcist, Jaws, The Silence Of The Lambs, The Sixth Sense, Black Swan, and Get Out were nominated. In fact, Fargeat is the first woman horror director to be nominated for Best Picture. This is a massive win. (Of course, we are hoping for a trophy, too!)

In response to the nominations, Fargeat said, “I think we are used to put people into boxes — if you are this then you can’t do that, if you look like that you can’t do that — and I think this movie is about exploding the boxes.”

Plus, Robert Eggers’ Nosferatu has four Oscars nominations in the categories Best Cinematography, Best Production Design, Best Costume Design, and Best Makeup and Hairstyling.
