System Of A Down may have been released “Toxicity” back in 2001 on the album of the same name, but it remains one of the most iconic tracks and music videos in rock music. In fact, the music video has officially crossed the one billion views mark on YouTube.
This is their second music video to hit this milestone. Previously, “Chop Suey!” crossed that threshold and now sits at 1.4 billion views.
In July 2024, lead vocalist Serj Tankian sat down with actor and host Rainn Wilson on his Soul Boom podcast to discuss the meaning of “Toxicity.”
Tankian explained “‘Sacred silence’ alludes to Native American understanding of spirituality and it’s the place that you go to if you meditate. Everything is lost and everything is found through the different veils of the sacred silence.”
He adds, “We know what sleep is. So, ‘somewhere in between’ is a beautiful thing because I think when people go to sleep, REM sleep, when that kicks in, there’s a moment where you’re meditating and you just don’t know it.”
