The Red Hot Chili Peppers are in a charitable mood, as the band has agreed to perform at a pair of benefit shows next month – one in Los Angeles, the other in New York.
The Chili Peppers will join Neil Young and Crazy Horse and Thelonious Monster for a March 1 concert at the Hollywood Palladium to raise money for an ailing substance abuse counselor.
Perry Farrell will DJ the event, dubbed “A Night for Gloria,” and proceeds from the show will be donated to Gloria Scott, whom organizers credit with having “helped thousands of souls in Los Angeles” through such recovery programs as Cry Help and Succaro. Scott is seriously ill.
According to management reps for the Chili Peppers, the concert was assembled by Bob Forrest – singer/songwriter for Thelonious Monster – and RHCP frontman Anthony Kiedis, who has been counseled by Scott in the past for his own substance abuse problems.
For Young, “A Night for Gloria” will give him the chance to pay back the Chili Peppers for having played his pair of Bridge School benefit concerts in October.
Tickets for “A Night for Gloria” go on sale Saturday.
The Chili Peppers also will perform at a March 14 fundraiser in New York for the Robin Hood Foundation, hosted by Conan O’Brien and Gwyneth Paltrow at Irving Plaza.
The Robin Hood Foundation seeks to prevent poverty by funneling money into many different local organizations, including the Children’s Defense Fund and the Harlem Children’s Zone. Since 1998, the Robin Hood Foundation has given over $90 million to more than 100 New York-based charities.
