“Leave that ***damn prom dress at home, forget the corsage, forget about that powder blue tux” –Mike D
Thursday, July 11th the legendary brand XLARGE hosts a photo show “Now & Then”, an event that features photos from the brand’s inception in 1991 and current work from a new generation of artists. On display at the show along with photography will be collectibles from the past 28 years of XLARGE history. XLARGE was the first brand in southern California to promote workwear as fashion. The brand has maintained its place as a unifying badge worn by young people, artists, and anyone who has a desire for utilitarian cool through the years.
Mike D, of the Beastie Boys, was an early supporter of the brand. The Beastie Boys and XLARGE seem to have had a circular influence on one another’s styles. In an early 90’s MTV House of Style Mike D said of his style “It’s about taking whatever you find and making it work” he continued “The key is finding those original, very functional, utilitarian, beautifully functional designs”. These words were mirrored in XLARGE then, as they are now. “Now & Then” is a chance to take in a staple of pop sub-culture, to enjoy the art and nostalgia, and according to the flyer, eat donuts. Yes to ALL of that.
