Notre Dame Hero: When Tragedies Strike Heroes Arise

The world has Jean-Marc Fournier to thank for saving pieces of history. Many are reeling after the burning of Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris. When tragedy befalls us we can look to those who rise to help for solace. Jean-Marc Fournier stands out among 400 firefighters who saved Notre Dame from total destruction Monday evening. Chaplain of the Paris Fire Brigade, his dedication to positive impact in times of need is not new. After joining the armed forces diocese in 2004 he spent seven years working with the army all over the world and served in Afghanistan. He responded to the scene of the November 13, 2015, terrorist attack on Parisian music venue the Bataclan to pray over the dead, absolve the dying, and console survivors. Monday he rushed into Notre Dame as fires raged to retrieve the crown of thorns and blessed sacrament. No matter a person’s beliefs, religious artifacts carry much of history. As the global community recovers from this sad event, we can turn our attention to greater persons who have dedicated their lives to encouraging the spirits of others. True heroism braves injustice, leads in times of trouble, and comforts sorrow. Deepest Gratitude Chaplain Fournier.
