No Doubt is putting the finishing touches on the video for “Underneath It All,” the third single from its latest album, Rock Steady. The group shot the clip earlier this month in Los Angeles with director and longtime collaborator Sophie Muller and the direction team known as Logan. The clip is set to premiere July 16.
No Doubt’s Gwen Stefani explains that the video’s concept goes along with the song’s title. “It is pretty simple,” Stefani says, writing on the group’s official website ( nodoubt.com). “It starts off with me totally made up with loads of makeup and hairdos, clothes, etc. and I slowly strip it away to a natural no-makeup vibe: underneath it all…get it?”
The work with Muller and Logan continues the trend of collaboration that began with the making of Rock Steady, which was created with the help of several top-notch producers. The song “Underneath It All” also materialized from a collaboration of another kind-songwriting-between the group and the Eurythmics’ Dave Stewart.
Stefani said, “The whole idea was to kind of experiment on this record, and if any amazing thing would come along, like someone like Dave Stewart wants work with you, go and do it. It doesn’t mean it’s gonna make the record, it doesn’t mean it might not be sh-t or might be the most amazing song you wrote or whatever. It was just about doing it, experience it, learn, and see what happens.”
Regarding Stewart, Stefani writes on the site: “Can you imagine growing up totally admiring someone as a fan and then getting to write a really beautiful song together?”
No Doubt remains on tour in the U.K. The group performs Thursday (June 27) at London’s Brixton Academy.
