A new theatre project involving My Chemical Romance may be in the works, according to comments made by director/playwright/actor John Cameron Mitchell that are currently circulating online.
Mitchell—best known for creating and starring in the cult rock musical Hedwig And The Angry Inch and directing its film adaptation—revealed during a recent appearance that he is quietly developing a theatrical project with the band. In a clip that has quickly begun spreading across social media, Mitchell said, “My Chemical Romance, who I’m working on a project with for theatre, they do one show a week.”
While details remain scarce, Mitchell hinted that the collaboration has not yet been formally announced. “It’s a little secret,” he added. “It’s not announced yet, but you know, I’m gonna give you a little zzz there. That’s all you’re getting. We still gotta sign stuff.”

Mitchell also praised the band while discussing their current touring schedule. “They’re great people and they’re so luxurious now that they do one a week,” he said. “They’re doing the stadium so they can go home.”
The possibility of a theatrical project tied to My Chemical Romance is not entirely out of left field. In a 2021 interview between MCR frontman Gerard Way and Travis Mills for Apple Music 1, Way shares, “There was talks very early about some kind of animated musical. Then there was talks a decade or so later about a musical. But the person who approached me about this musical there said, ‘Are you ever interested in doing Black Parade as a musical?’ I was like, ‘To be honest with you, I think it’s too soon,’ at the time. I was like, ‘I don’t think the record has lived long enough.’”
He continues, “The Black Parade itself, just from all the art and the videos and the inside photographs. It really is this kind of massive world. I think within that you could do a number of things. There’s all kinds of different characters to explore. I mean, you could even end up with a totally different protagonist.”
