After two decades, Matchbook Romance is officially back with a new song, “Something Worse Than The Night.” Exciting, right? And that’s not all, they’re also gearing up to release the 20th anniversary version of their sophomore album, VOICES, on February 13 via Epitaph Records.
The band says, “As the 20th anniversary of VOICES approached, we wanted to honor the album while also sharing something new. There were two songs we began recording during those Long View Farm sessions, but they were never finished. Nearly two decades later, in the summer of 2025, we completed those two tracks alongside John Goodmanson at Robert Lang Studios in Seattle, WA.”
They add, “Today, we’re releasing the first of those two songs. ‘Something Worse Than the Night’ is out everywhere now! Thank you for singing along, for keeping the music alive, and for celebrating VOICES with us… 20 years later.”
“Something Worse Than The Night” Lyrics:
Can’t save us
We were meant to rust
We’re getting used to
The taste of blood
Was it the happiness
Or the tragedy
That’s got me spilling my guts
Now I’m falling for anything
Anything you say
I want to believe
Could spend a lifetime
Counting exit wounds
Caught in your headlights
I can’t outrun you
Remember when fear
Showed us its teeth
It drained the life
From everything
So don’t hesitate
Look it straight in the eye
All good things
In good time

Now I’m falling for anything
Anything you say
I want to believe
Could spend a lifetime
Counting exit wounds
Caught in your headlights
I can’t outrun you
I won’t let you out
Out of my sight
For fear that we are temporary
I will hold you up
Up to the light
To see all the
Colors inside
Cause I’m falling for anything
Anything you say
I want to believe
Could spend a lifetime
Counting exit wounds
Caught in your headlights
I can’t outrun you
Anything you say…
Cause I’m falling for anything
You tell me I am
Anything you say…
