Pop superstar Mariah Carey, hospitalized a week ago, has suffered an “emotional and physical breakdown,” a spokeswoman said Wednesday.
“Mariah has suffered an emotional and physical breakdown,” Carey’s publicist Cindi Berger said. “She is just taking it day by day (and) is resting and improving,” Berger said.
Carey, 31, was admitted to an undisclosed New York-area hospital on July 25. Her breakdown forced her to cancel her headline role in MTV’s 20th anniversary show scheduled for Wednesday night.
Asked whether Carey’s problems were precipitated by any particular work-related or personal issues, Berger said “No, something like this is always a cumulative effect.”
On Tuesday the spokeswoman said only that the pop diva was getting “much-needed rest.” Berger said had no other details on Carey’s prognosis or a possible discharge date.
Carey, one of the most successful female solo singers with more than a dozen No. 1 singles in her career, has canceled all public appearances.
In recent months she filmed two movies, “Glitter” and “Wise Girls.” She also wrote, recorded and produced her newest album, the soundtrack to “Glitter”, which is due for release on Aug. 21.
Carey’s single “Loverboy” hit the number one slot on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip Hop singles chart and number two on its Hot 100 after 180,000 singles were sold in its first week of retail release.
