The 67th Grammy Awards ceremony took place on February 2 at Los Angeles’ Crypto.com Arena, and it was a historic night to say the least. 2024’s biggest pop icons Chappell Roan, Sabrina Carpenter, and Charli XCX all took home their first-ever Grammys. Plus, Beyoncé became the first Black performer to win the award for Best Country Album and even took home her first Album Of The Year win for Cowboy Carter.
It was also a night where many rising and established artists used their platform to fight back against recent political attacks on LGBTQ+ individuals, DEI rollbacks, and ICE raids. Here are the most inspiring messages shared by Grammy winners below.
Chappell Roan:
On The Red Carpet: “It’s brutal right now but trans people have always existed and they will forever exist. They will never, no matter what happens, take trans joy away. That has to be protected more than anything because I would not be here without trans girls. So, just know, that pop music is thinking about you and cares about you. And I’m trying my best to really stand up for you in every way I can.”
On Grammys Stage: “I told myself if I ever won a Grammy and I got to stand up here in front of the most powerful people in music, I would demand that labels in the industry profiting millions of dollars off of artists would offer a livable wage and health care, especially to developing artists. Because I got signed so young—I got signed as a minor. When I got dropped, I had zero job experience under my belt. And like most people, I had a difficult time finding a job in the pandemic and could not afford health insurance. It was so devastating to feel so committed to my art and feel so betrayed by the system and so dehumanized to not have health insurance. If my label would’ve prioritized artist health, I could have been provided care by a company I was giving everything to. So, record labels need to treat their artists as valuable employees with a livable wage and health insurance and protection. Labels, we got you, but do you got us?”
Doechii:
“I know that there is some Black girl out there, so many Black women out there that are watching me right now and I want to tell you: You can do it. Anything is possible. Anything is possible. Don’t allow anybody to project any stereotypes on you, that tell you that you can’t be here, that you’re too dark or that you’re not smart enough or that you’re too dramatic or you’re too loud. You are exactly who you need to be, to be right where you are, and I am a testimony.”
Alicia Keys:
“This is not the time to shut down the diversity of voices. We’ve seen on this stage talented, hardworking people from different backgrounds with different points of view. And it changes the game. DEI is not a threat, it’s a gift.”
Lady Gaga:
“Trans people are not invisible. Trans people deserve love, the queer community deserves to be lifted up. Music is love. Thank you.”
Shakira:
“I want to dedicate this award to all my immigrant brothers and sisters in this country. You are loved, you are worth it, and I will always fight with you. And to all of those women who work really hard every day to provide for their families, you are the true She-wolves.”
