Evanescence are stepping into a new era with their forthcoming album—and they’re not easing into it. In a new interview with Kerrang!, frontwoman Amy Lee opens up about Sanctuary, set for release June 5, framing it as both a personal and collective response to the current state of the world.
While working on Sanctuary, Lee found herself rewriting material as global and political tensions escalated—choosing to channel that energy into the music rather than social media. “I know that music has the power to affect people,” she says, noting that focusing on the record felt like the most meaningful way to cut through the noise. “I can do more by channeling all of that energy into music instead of spending time on social media saying the right words and trying to not get freaked out by the way people misinterpret those words.”
Still, she’s clear this wasn’t a role she was chasing. “I’m not political. I don’t want this. This was put upon us all,” Lee says. “We’ve been forced into this situation where if we don’t speak up and fight back… we’re next.”
Immediately following the release of Sanctuary, Evanescence will be hitting the road. You can check out the band’s full tour schedule below, and purchase tickets here.
