The band notes, “‘black cloud’ was a song Dan [Braunstein] and Jesse [Cash] wrote from scratch in the studio. It felt as if we were writing the song ‘backwards,’ starting with bass, drums, melody, and then adding the guitar last. We just wanted the song’s personality to remain pure and simple, without forcing any ulterior moods or intricacies into it. The result is some of the strongest melodies and lyrics on the record.”

Cash adds, “When I wrote that song, I was thinking about the day my dad died, but I wasn’t writing about my dad dying, if that makes sense. It would be inaccurate to say that that song was written about my dad. It’s not, but that is the feeling that I was anchoring to while writing it.”
