Following the release of their nostalgia-tinged “Headlight Torches” last month, the new indie/emo supergroup Suburban Eyes has unveiled their latest offering, “4AM.” Both tracks are slated to be featured on the group’s forthcoming debut self-titled collection, which will arrive on August 30 via Spartan Records.

“I had a cassette copy of Toad the Wet Sprocket’s ‘Fear’ in high school and the song “Is It For Me” really resonated with me for some reason,” Eric Richter, formerly of Christie Front Drive and Antarctica, shares. “I had a very vivid picture of how the lyrics looked like played out in my mind. ‘4AM’ is in that spirit.”

He continues, “I named it ‘4AM’ after reading the announcement of Wayne Shorter’s death that read, ‘Today at 4 a.m., Wayne Shorter peacefully continued on his immense journey into the unknown.’ I thought that was pretty so I used the time of his death as a tribute of sorts and because it fit the subject matter of the song. After the song was mixed and finished, I revisited the Toad The Wet Sprocket song and coincidentally, the meeting time of the characters in the story is 4 a.m. There are some paths you cannot avoid.”

The serendipitous display effortlessly captures the magic of ‘90s emo but also the feeling of being awake at 4 AM. The day ahead filled with possibility and uncertainty. Vocalist/guitarist Richter and multi-instrumentalist Jeremy Gomez, formerly of Mineral and The Gloria Record, weave together their vocal and arrangement talents across the track, creating a haunting yet beautiful soundscape. Drummer John Anderson, formerly of Boys Life, acts as the steady heartbeat of “4AM,” adding to the raw and intimate backdrop of the release.
