One of the most exciting announcements of Disney’s D23 2019 was “Cruella”, the live-action prequel to “101 Dalmatians”. The movie’s star, Emma Stone, unveiled the details via video message during the event. Only one photo has been revealed and it’s perfect. With Stone as Cruella, the film takes place during London’s 1970’s punk era. It looks like the character hasn’t yet evolved to her fur coat wearing days and is instead leather-clad from head to toe. She sports the bi-chromatic hairstyle and red lip with dark eye makeup that defines Cruella’s look. Disney’s “Maleficent” provided the audience a backstory as to why the character would curse a baby in “Sleeping Beauty” so it’s possible “Cruella” will give us insight into what drives her to steal puppies to make her fur coats. The film, due to be released May 28, 2021, is in production with Aline Brosh McKenna, Jessica Virtue, and Glenn Close as executive producers. Close, if you remember, starred as Cruella in the 1996 live-action “101 Dalmatians” movie so the ship should stay the course, creatively leaning into somewhat scarce source material for the iconic villain.
