Creed lead singer Scott Stapp (news) has offered his “sincere regret” to fans for the band’s recent tour-date postponements, and also announced a series of make-up dates in the cities affected.
In a note sent Thursday (October 10) to fans subscribed to the group’s e-mailing list, Stapp explained that he is “suffering from acute laryngitis due to the swelling of my vocal cords” and hoped that radio stations, promoters, and “loyal fans…will understand my situation and forgive the inconvenience that this has caused them.”
Creed has reshuffled its itinerary and will be back on the road starting October 16 in Tacoma, Washington. Shows in Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Diego, and Bakersfield, California have all been rescheduled for the fourth week in October, while the date in Spokane, Washington will be made up on November 29.
Appearances in Phoenix and Sacramento, California will now take place in early December. The band has also added a show in Las Vegas on October 29 to make up for its October 4 appearance there which, because of Stapp’s throat, “wasn’t up to Creed’s standards.”
The roots of the ailment can be traced back to Stapp’s car accident in July that forced the cancellation of the band’s entire summer tour. As a result, Stapp says, during the band’s late-summer and fall tour stint in support of Weathered, he tried to “aggressively play the already scheduled shows as well as trying to make up all of the canceled dates in a short amount of time,” thus causing the throat problems.
Stapp also addressed the group’s appearance on Alcatraz Island in San Francisco on October 10. The band was scheduled to headline the high-profile concert but backed out as the date approached, due to Stapp’s throat condition. However, the group reconsidered, performing a brief set alongside last-minute headliners the Wallflowers, “despite direct orders from my ear, nose, and throat specialist Dr. Joseph Sugerman, and at the risk of possibly causing further damage to my vocal cords,” Stapp writes.
“The band and I have decided to do a shortened set due to the fact that are 600 winners that have already been flown in from around the country that have taken time off of work and made extensive personal arrangements to see the show. Us playing this show is only being made possible by me taking an anti-inflammatory shot known as Decadron that, although it can’t be taken on a daily basis, will temporarily ease the swelling in my throat.”
Stapp continued, “Contrary to popular belief, we aren’t being paid for the show, the only reason we are doing it is that we simply feel like we must make some attempt to honor this commitment out of respect for the time, effort, and trouble that the fans must have gone through to make it to this show. The Wallflowers have graciously agreed to come and play the rest of the evening so that the other promotional, charity, and television commitments that we had made can be fulfilled.”
