While on the idobi Radio Summer School Tour, Chase Petra has revealed A Terrible Ennui, a vital trio of songs that discuss the plight of being a human…the good, bad, and ugly.

Chase Petra shared on Instagram, “Growing up – back when depression first got its grubby hands on me – I used to lament about all of the terrible feelings I felt, mostly to my dad. I asked him how I could possibly feel so bad even in the absence of any ‘real’ hardship (whatever that means). He would reply, ‘You’re suffering a terrible ennui,’ and then he’d laugh. I’d laugh every time he said it, too.”

The artist added, “When I was younger – before I knew what ‘ennui’ even meant – I laughed because when my dad found something funny, so did I. As I got older, I laughed, in spite of myself, equally annoyed to be reminded of my own melodrama as I was humored. Now, as something like a full-grown adult, I laugh because how in the world had I forgotten again? How human it is to feel hopeless. How unbelievably small and silly and worth it a life is. How misery is just as valuable and unpredictable as joy, rage, jealousy, hope, contentedness. How fucking funny and strange everything becomes when you look closely enough.”

Chase Petra concludes, “A Terrible Ennui is a collection of three tracks, each exploring a different facet of pain/discomfort/maladjustment. The conflicts I reference are internal, external, societal, interpersonal, insular, and occasionally insufferable. They are largely commonplace and somewhat unimportant snapshots of my normal life that have left me in despair – the way people are often left.”
