It seems that everyone has something to say about “American Idol” and MTVNews.com is no different. Here’s the first edition of our new weekly performance-night roundup: March 16 Surprise performance : Singing a Motown classic (“You’ve Made Me So Very Happy”) rather than a rock song, Constantine delivered his best performance to date, showing versatility and vocal range.
Fashion hits and misses : Teen firecracker Mikalah took the judges’ advice and looked her age, but her pants were so low-cut she couldn’t even sit down next to Ryan. There was too much chest from the usually classy Anwar. Leather pants are typically not recommended for guy contestants, but Bo rocked them well.
Judging the judges: Randy was unusually harsh, and since Paula tends to repeat him, she was too, even shockingly with Carrie. “Pitchy” continues to be the overused critique and is almost a catchphrase now (the new “dawg,” perhaps?). Simon called Nadia a “steak” and Paula called that critique genius, although not sure either felt complimented. Simon’s most creative barb: “It was akin to the office Christmas party where someone attempts at the end of the evening to entertain everyone and they fail,” he told Anthony.
Best audience sign : “Rockers rule.” Right on.
Who will go : Lindsey finally showed some personality with “Knock on Wood,” but she still lacks the “It” factor.
Who needs to step it up : Anthony has a good backstory, and being the Clay Aiken/John Stevens of this season helps him, but he’s almost too confident. And his “Breaking Up Is Hard to Do” was dreary.
Who is the one to beat: With Mario gone, Bo’s stock has risen. It’s his season, but Nadia is catching up to Anwar as the close second.
You told us: After hearing the contestants sing tonight, I have no desire to hear them again. It’s not “American Idol,” but American Nightmare! – Anne, 42 Campbell, CA
I think that Mikalah and Nadia should have been gone and that they should have kept Aloha. I also think that Anthony needs to leave and that David should come back. I feel that this season is going to be a sucky one! All of the best singers are gone, so what is the point in watching? – Netta, 18 Rock Hill, SC
