WILLOW has announced her upcoming album, empathogen. The follow-up to her previous alt-rock release, <COPINGMECHANISM>, is due out on May 3. Fans get an idea of her new sound with her second song off of the upcoming LP, “b i g f e e l i n g s.”

The track maneuvers the singer-songwriter into a new field, teetering on the alternative sphere. Beginning with old-timey piano keys to introduce the single before soft yet powerful vocals from WILLOW kick off the song, there’s a clear difference in style. That isn’t bad at all; there’s a variety of influences sprinkled throughout, which ushers in jazz and contemporary rock, all while covering complex topics about emotions. She may be moving away from her previous concept that played more in the emo-alt realm, but she continues to embody a punk spirit.

“Musically, it has a darkness and complexity that reflects what we all experience in our own minds,” WILLOW explains. “The song is about accepting those intense feelings that you have no idea what to do with.” She says that the track is meant to be dense and something beautiful yet dark since it was written during a difficult time in her life. “I wrote ‘b i g f e e l i n g s’ during a week where I was coming to terms with my own emotional patterns that I hadn’t known were there.”

The 12-song album will feature multi-instrumentalist Jon Bariste and indie-rocker St. Vincent. Listeners can pre-order the album on her site and can check out the full tracklisting for empathogen below.
