After teasing fans with their first new music in 13 years and their first independent release in 25 years, Thursday has unleashed their captivating new single, “Application For Release From The Dream.” Clocking in at an impressive four minutes and 29 seconds, the atmospheric release marks a monumental moment for the band as they assert their artistic independence with fervor nearly three decades since their inception. With a soaring anthemic chorus that echoes their signature style as well as their growth, Thursday’s latest release adds a refreshing layer to their illustrious discography.
In a thread published to their X (formerly Twitter) account yesterday, the Geoff Rickly-fronted emo/hardcore icons detailed their storied career, from “small white van to play basements and VFW Halls — attics, kitchens and back yards — with a bunch of burned CDRs marked in black Sharpie” to now. With “Application For Release From The Dream” serving as their first new music in over a decade, the band continues in the thread, “ But now we are free. Free to make our own mistakes. Free to turn this band into whatever we dream it to be, whether we want to make it a collective of rotating members, a small cottage industry, a publishing house, a record label, or just a group of friends still having fun together after all these years.”
Additionally, hours before the track officially dropped on streaming platforms, the band premiered it as part of their encore in a “tiny independent venue like we would’ve played when we were releasing Full Collapse,” which the group issued on April 10, 2001. Listen to “Application For Release From The Dream” below.
Thursday is currently on the road before heading overseas to perform in Europe and the UK this summer. The group will perform at When We Were Young Fest in Las Vegas, NV, this fall, where they will play Full Collapse in full.
