Ahead of their eagerly awaited back-to-back stop at When We Were Young Fest later this year, The All-American Rejects have launched a spirited cover of Harvey Danger’s 1997 banger, “Flagpole Sitta.”
“We’ve always felt that if an idea survives a hangover, then it’s probably a good one,” the band shares in a press release regarding their reimagination of the track. “‘Flagpole Sitta’ was such an idea, born of a late-night, post-show, adrenaline-fueled drive. We recorded it because we wanted to see how it would fall out of us on the floor – either like a hot bag of shit, or a vibe. It was also a good excuse to see if the 4 of us could stand each other for a week in the studio after 7 years of silence. Turns out it was alright.”
Leading up to the release, the group has been teasing the cover using various hashtags on Instagram, including #NotNothing, #BetterThan, and #CertainlyNot. Finally, the group shared a visualizer yesterday, September 12, of vocalist Tyson Ritter scribbling and writing, “but I’m not well,” the anthemic chorus of “Flagpole Sitta.” A voiceover is heard growing more frantic, proclaiming, “It’s something, but it’s not nothing…it’s definitely not nothing…nothing is nothing.”

The band continues, “As for what’s coming next, we will leave that up to the divine feminine. If she wants it, she’ll get it.” The four-piece group is slated to perform tonight, Friday, September 13, at the Utah State Fairpark before hitting several additional fall festivals, including When We Were Young, where they’ll be performing their 2002 self-titled album in full.
