A year in quarantine means a year without live music. We’ve compensated with livestreams and new releases, but nothing will compare to the bass in your bones and a sea of fans as far as the eye can see.
Lucky for us, when reality fails we can always dream. You won’t be in a stadium anytime soon but you can take a trip down to the studio with My Kid Brother. The band’s live performance of “Pastels” sits somewhere at the intersection of basement show and subconscious adventure.
Part of creating the dream was setting the scene. When My Kid Brother decided to record themselves performing the tune, they went back to where the magic began. “We filmed this video at the same studio we recorded the album in,” keyboardist and vocalist Piano Whitman says.
From there the band and crew went to work on making the room cozy. “We decorated the space to make it feel like our living room/bedrooms.” They enlisted the help of a friend to snooze through the festivities, brought in a nightstand for each member, and cast an ethereal pink glow over the whole scene. “It was a really unique and fun experience!”
It all serves to weaken the link between reality and fantasy. As you watch the band pluck away, you feel the guitar in your chest. Every drum beat vibrates your feet and you’re almost convinced you’re right there with them. Through thousands of miles and weeks of time, My Kid Brother found a way to give us those live music feels straight from a screen.
The song itself was written about run-ins with psychedelics and the video seems to be harmonious to its origins. Jump out of this realm and into the one My Kid Brother has created for a little break from the 2021 stress… and once you’re done, get hyped. They didn’t just perform “Pastels”, they revisited their entire self titled EP.
