We all know the story: Start a band with your buddies, play some shows, then watch your wildest dreams come true.

Of course it never really comes that easily. If you stick it out like the guys in Weigh The Anchor though, you’ll reap the rewards. The Ontario based band has been making waves since 2017. Whether it was the drop of their debut EP or the bumps and bruises along the way, the past few years have made the band who they are today.

This new and improved version of Weigh The Anchor is the one we meet on “Medicate”. The song is reminiscent of the trials the band has made it through. “We were in a time where there was a lot of change going on in our lives both personally [and] as a band.”

Weigh The Anchor isn’t afraid to lay it all on the table, which gives their latest track an authenticity you can’t reproduce. It also made it fairly easy to write. “[It’s] a song that came together rather quickly. From its inception to the final recorded version was about 2-3 months,” the band says.

When vocalist Andrew Zamora half sings, half shouts in desperation, “I just need another day to make me feel okay,” it relates on a deeply emotional level. The raw honesty behind his voice coupled with the universal feeling of pushing on when times are tough make “Medicate” a song that won’t soon be forgotten.

The basis for the song might have been struggle but the end result was a goal accomplished. It’s an uplifting story, reallywe all want to believe we’ll find a rainbow at the end of a mountain of BS. For Weigh The Anchor, it came by way of an intense rock tune. “While the song itself is about struggling with these changes and having to face them head on, for us it has become more representative of how we were able to persevere through a time of uncertainty and come out stronger than before.”

The genre-bending song takes on elements of pop punk, alt-rock, and the emo bands you loved in highschool. (Whatever you want to call it, we’ll take twelve.) “When you’re going through hell, keep going” is an adage old as time for a reason. Weigh The Anchor took their pain and let it inspire a great track that’s sure to kickstart a momentous career. Our only question is: When can we expect more?

Fun fact about “Medicate”:

  • “[We] spent all of our money on recording so the only things we had to eat in the studio was a six pack of beer and 3 cans of lentils.”
