Alexander O’Connor, better known as Rex Orange County, was Downtown LA’s man of the hour last night. In celebration of his latest album, The Alexander Technique, an intimate crowd gathered at Pico Union Project, where Rex performed about a dozen songs. Grinning ear to ear while four years of work finally came to fruition. Rex commented, “This is an album I’ve wanted to put out for so long, and I’m incredibly pleased it’s out now.”

‘The Alexander Technique’ has been in development since 2020, making it the longest-coming and most defining work of Rex’s career. His previous album, Who Cares?, debuted in 2022 with a brighter, pop influence and feel-good tone, a departure from his typical earnest, melancholic lyricism. With this new sound, he brought to our ears a more vibrant, optimistic project.

Effectively, Who Cares? became a stepping stone for The Alexander Technique. Easing the audience into this more complex and sophisticated side of Rex. He insists, in an interview with Billboard, that Who Cares? needed to be released first because The Alexander Technique deserved much more time, being “more ambitious as a whole.” Rex admits it’s where his more emotional writing from that time ended up, and it shows.

The decision to open with track No. 7, “The Table,” pristinely set the tone for the album. In it, Rex dissects the past life of a wooden table, “Wondering exactly which tree gave itself/And more importantly/Who sat beneath that tree/Which lovers carved initials/What happened on the ground around it?” Through this story of the past life of a kitchen table, Rex invites us to consider the journey of everything around us so that we may realize how significant it is that it’s all somehow come together here and now. The concept is as mind-boggling as it is humbling. Ideas of growth, reflection, and a sense of self are motifs throughout the project which unsurprisingly parallel Rex Orange County’s journey as an artist.
