PhaseOne is on one hell of a hot streak at the moment. Pushing the limits of what EDM and metal squished together can be, they have created some truly unique tracks. From collaborations with Void of Vision and Polaris to Thy Art Is Murder and Northlane, the list goes on. And their latest collaboration changes things up a little bit more.
It’s called “Gangrene” and features RedHook, Australia’s premiere freak-out rock outfit. With vocalist Emmy Mack pulling the strings, the band deliver a cathartic piece of bright green chaos. Such chaos fits perfectly with the PhaseOne ethos, adding their own toxic drum and bass beat. It is a track that is made to light up rock clubs as much as warehouse raves.
Phase One had this to say about it:
“This was a fun one to work on. RedHook sent me the original demo idea, and I immediately started getting inspiration on how to add some electronic elements to it and knew instantly it called for a DNB drop. I began working on an idea just using the original WAV file demo they sent me. I’m pretty sure I turned an idea in for them to hear that same day, and they loved the vision.
We then pretty quickly wrapped up the final recording stems, collaborating with a little back and forth before I wrapped up the mix and master. It was nice to write something more punk-poppy, as I’ve usually gone more of a metal route but I love the way it still seamlessly flows and intertwines the rock and electronic elements.”
And Emmy had this to say, getting into the nitty-gritty of the track:
“‘Gangrene’ is a song about severing ties with a toxic partner. Even though they might feel like they’ve become a part of you, sometimes cutting them off completely is the only way to save yourself.
“Craig and I have been huge PhaseOne fans for years, so it was hard not to fangirl our little brains out when Graeme hit us up to collab. He was so effortless and fun to work with, the song was like a ball we kept bouncing back and forth and it just kept getting bigger and badder every time.”
And here is “Eyes Wide Shut” with the undeniable Void Of Vision, just as an extra treat:
RedHook have just released their debut album, Postcard From A Living Hell. Here is the opening track, “Postcard Xo”:
