That’s right: Michael Stipe of the 90s’ alternative rock band, R.E.M. While this looks like a random choice at first glance, the “Losing My Religion” singer is Cobain’s godfather and remains an important figure in her life. In a celebratory birthday photo dump posted to Instagram, Cobain shares images of Stipe and her new husband, expressing her gratitude for the people in her life and the moments that have allowed her to grow.
“Entering this new decade, I hope to stay soft no matter how hardening the world can feel at times, bask in the present moment with reverence, shower the people I am lucky enough to love with more appreciation than words could ever do justice & hold space to keep learning, so the growth never stops. I’m happy to be here & I’m happy you’re here too.”

Marking Hawk’s first marriage and Cobain’s second, the lovebirds have been a public pair since January 2021. And while they are powerful together, their individual identities say a lot about their parents’ inspiration and influence. As Frances Bean Cobain works as a visual artist and model, Riley Hawk follows in his father’s footsteps as a pro-skater. After watching his son receive the 2013 Amateur Of The Year award by Skateboarder Magazine, Tony Hawk gave his then-22-year-old son high praise for his early skills on the board.
“My son is already better than me in a lot of ways,” Hawk says. “He’s more of a street skater. He’s way more technical. He hits the handrails, the ledges, and stuff.”
