Halsey is back with the new single, and it’s going to give you major early aughts vibes. So, grab your skinny scarves and statement belts to listen to their track “Lucky.”
Preceded by “The End,” listeners may derive that Halsey’s “Lucky” samples Britney Spears‘ 2000 single of the same name from Oops!… I Did It Again. “When I was five, it always felt like Britney was singing directly to me. 24 years later, these words hit different. love you forever,” Halsey said on social media.
Similar to Spears, Halsey‘s chorus says, “‘Cause I’m so lucky, I’m a star/But I cry, cry, cry in my lonely heart, thinkin’/If there’s nothin’ missin’ in my life/Then why (Why, why?) do these tears come at night?”
Though, the verses reflect their health struggles with her recent diagnosis of T-cell lymphoma and lupus. “Then I left the doctor’s office full of tears/Became a single mom at my premiere/And I told everybody I was fine for a whole damn year/And that’s the biggest lie of my career,” they sing.
The raw, deeply personal message is juxtaposed with ’00s glam and vignettes of Halsey finding her inner child. Watch the “Lucky” music video below.
On Instagram, the artist shared, “The lucky music video is out, and it’s a lot of feelings happening over here. It was really challenging to incorporate so many conflicting emotions in just a few minutes. This campaign has been fun because I WANT to have fun, but I made lot of this art when I was suffering. I have so many people to thank for being a part of this monumental moment in my life. From the bottom of my heart thank you @giancarla.coppola, pascale, and @simonrex415 and my entire team for making it happen.”
