Daisy Grenade has unleashed a rowdy cover of Nirvana’s 1991 single, “Polly,” ahead of their performance at When We Were Young Fest and support slot on State Champs’ forthcoming fall tour.
The duo shares, “‘Polly’ by Nirvana is a true story of a young girl coming home from a concert in Tacoma, Washington who was abducted, tortured, and raped, but managed to escape from her captor and live.”
They continue, “The song is sung from the perspective of the perpetrator in an effort to fully realize the horror of these events. We chose to cover this song not only because we are hugely inspired by Nirvana but as a way to reassert our power as women and to stand in solidarity with survivors of sexual assault. The story of ‘Polly’ and so many other women and girls like her is a story of strength, resilience, and power. We aim to make that very clear in this version, made and sung by women.”
Opening through a whirlwind of distorted guitars, the pair launch headfirst into the haunting track, layering each verse with gritty, grunge-soaked energy before launching into an array of brooding screams. Check out Daisy Grenade’s cover of “Polly” below.
