It was February 2009. A gallon of gas would have cost $2.40. Lady Gaga’s “Poker Face” was the No. 1 Billboard Hot 100 Chart song. Laika Studios was a fresh face in the animation world. With the release of their debut film Coraline, they captured the hearts and imaginations of a generation across America. Today, Laika celebrates Coraline’s success and their 15th birthday with a worldwide re-release of Coraline, amongst other festivities.
Coraline, directed by Henry Selick (The Nightmare Before Christmas), is a stop-motion animated feature that tells the tale of an 11-year-old girl stumbling upon a portal to a better world. There, an enigmatic feline helps her discover that her dream world is dangerous and helps her get back to where she belongs. The original blew audiences away, earning Laika and Coraline an Oscar nomination for Best Animated Feature. The newly remastered, stereoscopic 3D release will be stirring up nostalgia in select theaters from August 15-22. Get your tickets in the United States or anywhere else today.

The chance to see Coraline like never before is just one of the ways Laika is celebrating. Starting August 5, ‘Coraline’s Curious Cat Trail’ was officially launched in Laika’s stomping grounds at the OHSU Waterfront in Portland, Oregon. The project features 30 distinct feline statues inspired by the film’s “The Cat” character and spread throughout the downtown area. The installation is a joint effort between Laika, the Visit Downtown Campaign, OHSU Doernbecher Children’s Hospital, and Wild in Art.
If you’re looking for these funny felines, you can find them in several locations in downtown Portland from now until October 13. Participants can download the ‘Coraline’s Curious Cat Trail’ app for $1.49 in the App Store to view a map of the installations, “collect” cats as they go, unlock rewards, learn cat facts, and more. The installation will culminate in an auction of the statues to benefit the OHSU Doernbecher Children’s Hospital.
In other anniversary events, Laika asked its fans to “create a recording of yourself recreating your favorite scene from ‘Coraline’ in live-action.” Fans submitted their videos on Instagram, YouTube, and TikTok, tagging @laikastudios with #Coraline15Contest. The winning entry, produced and directed by Brittany Thurman earned a Scottie dog puppet from the film. Check out Brittany Thurman’s “Unwinding the Web” live-action scene below. And don’t forget to grab tickets to see Coraline in 3D, for a limited time only.
