Alkaline Trio’s tenth studio album, Blood, Hair, And Eyeballs, will be here before we know it—and yes, it is one of our Most Anticipated Albums of 2024! But to hold us over until its arrival on January 26 via Rise Records, the group has launched their final single, “Versions Of You.”

The latest track, serving as the third glimpse into the trio’s forthcoming album, takes a distinctive turn from the earlier album releases. In a departure from co-vocalist/guitarist Matt Skiba‘s usual role, co-vocalist and bassist Dan Andriano takes the lead, infusing the catchy track with a distinctive freshness. “Versions Of You” is crafted on the foundation of driving guitar work with Andriano’s vocal delivery, adding a raw and vulnerable element to the track.

“From the start, there was something really exciting about this one, a raw energy we didn’t want to let go,” Andriano shares of the new track. “I was playing guitar and showing a part to Cameron [Webb], Matt grabbed a bass and created this killer disjointed groove under what became the verse. It felt raw and ferocious, and we knew that’s what we had to capture, so that’s how we did it when the red light came on.”

He further elaborates that the track delves into the aftermath of a “broken friendship and realizing there’s just nothing there to try and rebuild…maybe the whole thing was artificial and driven by self-serving motives.” Through the song’s closing bridge, Andriano sings, “I dropped you a line/But you burned right through as you began to climb,” against the backdrop of Skiba crooning, “You traded in your leather for a denim and a polaroid/Put it up for sale in the mail for your brand new boy,” further propelling the notion of artificial friendship.
