(Un)Covered: Wake Me Up

“Wake Me Up”
Writers: Tim Bergling, Aloe Blacc, Mike Einziger, Melinda Marie Marantz, Aileen Marie Quinn
Original Release Date: June 17, 2013

A couple of summers ago, you couldn’t leave the house without hearing Avicii’s “Wake Me Up”.

With vocals by Aloe Blacc and acoustic guitar by Mike Einziger (of Incubus fame), Avicii debuted the song at a festival in Miami and it took off from there, charting all over the world and appearing in a variety of commercials. It’s hard not to bop your head when this song comes on, even if you’re not usually an EDM fan. While the guitar part has a folksy feel, the electronics cement this song as a club favorite.

Despite being a song designed to make you get up and dance, the English gents in You Me At Six gave it a mellow vibe when they covered it for BBC Radio 1’s Live Lounge. Their version is a lot more relaxed, acoustic, and overall soothing compared to the bright lights of the original. Ironically, it’s probably better suited to lulling you to sleep than waking you up, but it’s still enjoyable, and it’s fun to watch people’s reactions to this slowed-down version when they’re used to the original.
