(Un)Covered: Someday

“Someday”
Writers: Chad Kroeger, Mike Kroeger, Ryan Peake, Ryan Vikedal
Original Release Date: August 5, 2003

“Someday” we’ll be able to talk about Nickelback without laughing, but today is not that day.

Oh, Nickelback. Does anyone take them seriously anymore? I’m not sure how the rest of the world heard of them, but they’re huge in Canada. Or, at least, they were, particularly when their second album, Silver Side Up came out in 2001. They were on just about every radio station, and while I would never admit to being a fan, I can deal with the grunge-y feel of “Someday” in small doses (just please don’t make me listen to “Photograph”). There’s nothing inherently wrong with “Someday”, but it’s pretty generic—a standard alternative rock song about lost promises and failed relationships.

A couple of years ago, Rock Sound released a “Worships and Tributes” cover album, featuring a version of “Someday” by English pop-punkers ROAM. I hadn’t listened to ROAM before hearing this cover, but it immediately made me add them to my list of Bands to Look Up. They took the generic sound of “Someday” and made it more energetic, infusing it with a splash of pop-punk that turns it from mainstream radio to the type of song you’d expect to thrash around to at an underground club. Plus the faint English accents of the band members are more sonically pleasing to my ear than Chad Kroeger’s vocals.

No one wants to admit they’re fans of Nickelback, but if you feel the need to listen to one of their best known songs, ROAM offers an excellent alternative.
