(Un)Covered: On My Mind

“On My Mind”
Writers: Ellie Goulding, Max Martin, Savan Kotecha, Ilya Salmanzadeh
Original Release Date: September 17, 2015

If there’s one thing Ellie Goulding can do, it’s write a catchy song. “On My Mind”, the lead single from her third album, Delirium, is a perfect example.

The song is a little more electronic and a touch more R&B than the singer’s usual fare, but it’s still so easy to get it stuck in your head. Despite the repetition in the chorus, the verses are designed to make you think: who was actually at fault when this relationship fell apart? Some people think the song is Goulding’s response to Ed Sheeran’s “Don’t”–and, if it is, it gives us a whole different perspective on what went down between the two singers.

Don Broco took the poppy jam and made it their own. By covering it acoustically, they stripped away the electronic elements that made the original so addictive, and slowed it down, turning it into more of a crooning ballad. Rob Damiani’s baritone gives the song more weight than Ellie Goulding’s breathy but impressive soprano, and drummer Matt Donnelly’s alto provides a nice contrast in the chorus. This is the version you’d listen to if you were staying in by yourself, while the original would be the soundtrack to heading out for a night of fun.
