(Un)Covered: Call Me Maybe

Call Me Maybe”
Writers: Carly Rae Jepsen, Josh Ramsay, Tavish Crowe
Original Release Date: September 20, 2011

There’s no way you were born before 2011 and never heard Carly Rae Jepsen’s hit “Call Me Maybe”, but did you know that she has ties to our scene? From co-writing with Marianas Trench’s Josh Ramsay, to her bassist (Adam Siska, formerly of The Academy Is…), she’s literally everywhere.

Regardless of whether or not you like Ms. Jepsen, she can write one heck of an earworm. Despite lyrics that sound like the musical equivalent of a stereotypical YA novel protagonist proclaiming that “all the other boys try to chase me”, it’s next to impossible to get the words out of your head and you’ll accidentally find yourself quoting them in real conversations.

I’m biased because I absolutely adore the guys in Paradise Fears, but their cover of “Call Me Maybe” is fantastic. It has all the fun and bounce of the original, except toned down, with the piano-led intro sounding more like something you’d hear at a lounge bar rather than on the radio.

Meanwhile, another personal favorite, A Rocket to the Moon, released their own take. Nick Santino turns the jam into something a little more plaintive; more country than pop, with little more than a guitar to back him up. It’s smooth and almost elegant, coming across as less aggressive than the original.
