“Beverly Hills”
Writer: Rivers Cuomo
Original Release Date: March 29, 2005
For a song that’s over ten years old, Weezer’s “Beverly Hills” is still a jam. I dare you not to sing along to the “Gimme, gimme” hook, or shout along to it with your friends who are “just as screwy as [you]”.
Rivers Cuomo originally intended it to be a sincere look at what it would be like to live the good life, but after multiple rewrites, it evolved into the more sarcastic version we’ve come to know and love. Despite that, he counts it as one of his proudest musical achievements; and with a chorus that catchy, can you blame him?

The cover by Scottish rockers Twin Atlantic, released as part of RockSound’s Worships and Tributes CD last year is pretty much identical in terms of instrumentation, though it has a slightly heavier beginning. If you’re a fan of Twin Atlantic, you’ll also know it’s a little poppier than most of their own catalogue, and it’s nice to see them let loose and have a little fun. And while Weezer will always be a staple in our scene, it’s hard not to swoon over Sam McTrusty whose clipped and precise Glaswegian accent puts an emphasis on certain words, especially in the opening lines, making him sound even more sarcastic than Cuomo does in the original.
