Put your middle fingers up and rock TF out to today’s Inbox Jukebox Presents. We were first pulled into SOUNDR’s world last month with “Mania” and now she’s back to hook us again with her infectious pop punk banger “Dumb Dumb”.
“DUMB DUMB is about stepping into the power you have to change your life any time you want,” SOUNDR says. The song will immediately get you nodding your head to both the beat and the lyrical honesty, before turning into a headbang-fest when the sky-high riffs kick in. “It’s about deciding you deserve better than your current situation, and choosing yourself over something that might look pretty on the outside, but is bad for you underneath it all.”
“I wanted the music video to be playful, but also symbolic…We shot the whole video downtown SLC at an art installation called Dreamscapes. It was really important to me to have the setting be ‘odd’ or ‘different,’ to feel removed from everyday life, and I think we nailed that.”
Every part of the song feels empowering—SOUNDR’s commanding vocals are sugar sweet with an extra bite, making sure you take in every word. “DUMB DUMB was a lot of fun to write,” she shares. “We knew we wanted to go back to my roots in pop-punk, and I knew lyrically I wanted the song to feel playful, but also very direct and powerful. Instrumentally the song evolved in a very natural way. My producer, Stetson, is amazing at taking a ‘vibe’ and running with it.” This kind of stomper takes you back to the glory days of Warped Tour but elevates it to a new level with an alternative twist.
“DUMB DUMB” will also make you think about the state of today and how self-involved some people can be. “When we were brainstorming lyric direction we were talking about dumb social media habits, and the idea to poke fun at pop-culture and social media evolved,” she continues. The sharp observations about our social media obsessed society sting like fire and you’ll be ready for more from SOUNDR with every play. “Using “hashtag,” “subtweet,” and the second verse saying “ghosted texts, a glow up post, a subtle flex” are all pop-culture references we used to try to paint a relatable picture.”
It’s definitely relatable and damn, it’s got a good hook—so prepare to hit repeat on “DUMB DUMB” again and again. SOUNDR says: “I hope people sing along and feel like a badass that can handle anything!”
Fun facts about the “Dumb Dumb” Video:
“I wanted the music video to be playful, but also symbolic. I decided to use a giant 7ft tall teddy bear to represent the person/people the song is about because it feels softer (no pun intended…) – alluding to the storyline instead of outright showing it on screen. We shot the whole video downtown SLC at an art installation called Dreamscapes. It was really important to me to have the setting be ‘odd’ or ‘different,’ to feel removed from everyday life, and I think we nailed that.
There is so much art behind us – from the mannequin with a thread heart, to the old piano, to the flowers growing up the wall like roots, and then walking through the whole installation, the way the black light hits, the small pieces you might not catch the first watch, the whole music video is art inside art. And I finally get to be in a band again! It was so much fun to bring to life. I couldn’t be happier with how it all turned out.”
“The whole Dreamscapes art installation is huge, so many incredible artists – we had a hard time deciding which space to film in! I am a big fan of collecting art, so having the chance to film a music video for my own art, inside a visual art installation was a really cool experience.” –SOUNDR
