The number of people using online music- and video-sharing services has continued to rise sharply despite the self-imposed shutdown of song-swapping service Napster, according to a study released on Wednesday. Technology research firm Jupiter Media Metrix Inc. said at-home users of file-swapping services other than Napster totaled 6.9 million in August, up 492 percent from March, when Jupiter began tracking those services. Over the same period, according to the company’s Media Metrix audience ratings service, Napster’s user base fell 49 percent, to 5.5 million users in August, just after it shuttered its free service. The number of people downloading songs from the Internet on any given day has reached more than six million, according to a Pew Internet and American Life Project study. In the six months from August 2000 to February 2001, the average daily number of Internet users downloading music nearly doubled, despite the fact that Napster has recently been hamstrung by the RIAA and the courts in its efforts to openly share copyrighted materials. A group of researchers who foiled four different copyright protection technologies in a contest launched last year by the music industry is now being asked by the record companies to suppress its findings, one of the researchers said Tuesday. The research group – composed of students and professors from Princeton and Rice Universities and an employee of Xerox Palo Alto Research Center – had initially planned to present its findings Thursday at a Pittsburgh conference on information security but was then threatened with legal action by the forum, the Secure Digital Music Initiative (SDMI), a forum representing music and technology… Read more »
