Snapchat Filter Becomes Gen-Z Crime-Fighting Tool

The snapchat gender-swap filter has become a crime-fighting tool. Recently, 20-year-old Ethan, a college student from the San Fransisco south bay area, was empathetically distraught after a friend disclosed they had suffered sexual abuse as a young person. Using the popular snapchat filter he took a feminized photo of himself. With the photo, he created a female persona named “Ester” for the Tinder app. Ethan listed Ester’s age as 19 because Tinder has age guidelines. When a man swiped right and messaged Ethan’s Ester “Are you down to have some fun tonight” he then asked if they could switch their… Read more »

Judge Calls Napster Filters 'Disgraceful'

A federal judge leveled sharp criticism at Napster’s attempts to block trades of copyrighted works Tuesday, calling the company’s existing filters “disgraceful.” Presented with evidence from record companies and publishers that thousands of works ostensibly included in the file-swapping service’s filters were still available, U.S. District Judge Marilyn Hall Patel said something needed to change. “I think this is disgraceful,” she said, noting that if a song can be found by people on your service, Napster ought to be able to block it. If Napster can’t block copyrighted songs, she added, “maybe the system needs to be closed down.” Patel… Read more »

Labels Ask Judge To Make Napster Reverse Its Filtering Approach

RIAA lawyers say service should switch to a method in which permission would be sought in advance for every file. Napster has “flagrantly and intentionally” failed to filter out copyrighted songs, music industry lawyers said Tuesday (March 27), asking a judge to force the file-sharing service to switch to a “filter-in” method in which only specifically authorized songs would be available. In a “filter-in” system, Napster would have to start by banning everything, and then allow in songs that labels and artists tell them are approved for sharing – the opposite of the method Napster currently uses, where songs are… Read more »

Record Industry Says Napster Filter Is A Failure

The U.S. recording industry accused Napster of willfully ignoring a federal judge’s order to block copyrighted material, saying the Internet song-swap service was still facilitating the trade of millions of illegal music files. In papers filed at the U.S. District Court in San Francisco, which this month instructed Napster to stop trading copyrighted material, the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) said it saw no evidence of compliance. “There is no effective filtering out of copyrighted works operating now within Napster. We believe it is willful,” RIAA President Hilary Rosen told a telephone news conference. Napster President and CEO Hank… Read more »

Like concertgoers reluctantly heading home as the lights come up, many Napster users are heading for greener pastures as the company’s court mandated filters block more than a million copyrighted music files from the service. According to data from entertainment research firm Webnoize, the number of Napster users on the system at any given time has dropped from 1.5 million in mid-March to 1.1 million as of Friday a one-week decline of more than 25%. At the same time, however, Webnoize found that the average number of files shared by any one user, which had tumbled by 60% after Napster… Read more »

Napster Filtering Hits Snags As Users Try To Outwit System

File-sharing service attempts to comply with court order, but downloaders concoct ways to avoid blocks. Despite Napster’s promise to do everything in its power to comply with a court order to remove copyrighted songs from its system this week, users can still find – and download – plenty of tunes by Metallica and other artists. And those users are working just as hard, if not harder, to foil Napster’s efforts. Napster won’t say how many songs it has already filtered, but searches for top-selling artists such as Joe, ‘N Sync, Britney Spears and Eminem all turned up dozens of matches… Read more »
