Midwest emo fans have lots of great tunes to add to their playlists today. Kalamazoo, Michigan artist saturdays at your place have revealed their second full-length record these things happen, as well as the music video for “cross my heart.” With euphoric, yet angsty sonics, SAYP tackle the growing pains of young adulthood with the heart, humor, and talent to cement them in the genre’s hall of fame.
Across their 10 tracks, the band shares dazzling acoustic strums, nostalgia-inducing fizzy guitar lines, and tongue-in-cheek lyrics that’ll swiftly draw in long-time listeners and new fans, alike.
Notably, saturdays at your place was inspired by the 1999 Paul Thomas Anderson film, Magnolia, which tackles the randomness of life and how everyone is connected, whether they know it yet or not. However, the trio, Esden Stafne, Mitch Gulish, and Gabe Wood, all found inspiration with their emo peers. idobi Radio had the chance to catch up with the band on release day to chat about the five emo bands that helped bring these things happen to fruition.
Esden Stafne (Vocals/Bass)
1) Tigers Jaw: I was listening to a lot of Two Worlds at the time of writing this album. The vocals definitely take inspiration from that record.
2) Pup: Their lyrics are very dark and take on constant feelings of existential dread. My songs on this album are very similar.
Mitch Gulish (Guitar)
3) Worst Party Ever: Worst Party Ever strikes a balance that allows them to use repetition to really emphasize a melody without wearing it out. This pop sensibility blended with emotional chords and the driving instrumentation on their album Dartland is something we tried to capture on these things happen.
4) Oso Oso: Oso Oso has carved out their own space in the scene that makes them stand out in a way that hasn’t been replicated. Their use of acoustic guitar and piano alongside the traditional electric guitar/bass and drums that emo is known for gives their music an intimate feel while leaving space for the emotions in the songs to shine through.
Gabe Wood (Vocals/Drums)
5) Mali Valesquez: Mali’s vocal inflections and melody choices were super inspiring to me. I would sing her songs all the time in the car, and I tried writing a few songs emulating her technique. This is one of a few artists who helped me during a bit of a vocal rut while starting to write for this album.
saturdays at your place will be supporting the album release on the road this fall with Carly Cosgrove and RILEY!, kicking off on October 17. The band will then travel overseas to the UK and Europe in early 2026. Check out their full touring schedule below and purchase tickets here.
