As y’all know, GGR is all about supporting women and this episode is no exception. Sherin and Julian discuss some of the unstoppable women-led shows & movies they’ve been watching lately.
Comic Con, WYD? + Echo
Julian kicks off the show with a call for the Comic Con travel experience to step up, before diving into Echo, which is now streaming on Disney+ (read Julian’s review). Sherin and Julian chat about the cast and representation, the connections between the characters the wider MCU, and what they wanted to see more of.
The Color Purple, The Brothers Sun, True Detective: Night Country, The Perfect Affair
We’ve been spoiled lately by the sheer amount of badass women on screen—and our Rioters talk about a few. Sherin and Julian discuss The Color Purple (check out Julian’s review) and its themes of sisterhood, comparing it to the original novel. Then Sherin tells Julian about all the fantastic and emotionally complex women characters in The Brothers Sun, which you can watch now on Netflix (and dive into Sherin’s review).
Next up it’s time to squeal over True Detective: Night Country and its Lovecraftian influences, its incredible writing and cast of phenomenal women, and its family dynamics. Watch it on HBO, if you dare (and read Julian’s review for more hot takes). And when it comes to the “Nations of Unstoppable Women” in Echo and Night Country, Sherin has written the essay.
Our Rioters also raise their glasses to GGRioter Angela Henry who has an exciting new book out! The Perfect Affair is available in paperback, e-book, and audiobook—what’cha waiting for?!
Sanctuary: A Witch’s Tale feat. Amy de Bhrún, Stephanie Levi-John, and Hazel Doupe
Sanctuary: A Witch’s Tale is bringing some magical mystery to AMC+ & Sundance Now and we can’t wait for y’all to watch. To celebrate its debut, Sherin chats with Amy De Bhrún, Stephanie Levi-John, and Hazel Doupe all about their thrilling new characters.
Our Rioters close out the show by shouting out Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, the new take on Mean Girls (read Julian’s review), and The Beekeeper (read Julian’s review).
