‘NSync was the top musical act at the seventh annual Blockbuster Entertainment Awards Tuesday (April 10) night at L.A.’s Shrine Auditorium, winning Favorite CD (No Strings Attached), Favorite Single (“Bye, Bye, Bye”), and Favorite Pop Group.
The major music categories were mostly split, however, with a poodle-haired Christina Aguilera snagging Favorite Female Artist, Eminem taking Favorite Male Artist, and Destiny’s Child walking off with Favorite Group of the Year. Pink and Nelly were the Favorite New Artists.
The most movie-related wins were reaped by Charlie’s Angels with three (plus one for cast member Lucy Liu in Shanghai Noon). Kate Hudson’s triumph as Favorite Female Newcomer generated the most applause, however, in light of her unexpected Oscar loss as best supporting actress for Almost Famous.
“I love making movies and Cameron Crowe gave me the opportunity to make a really great one,” said Hudson, whose face radiated as much as a sparkly black dress that atoned for her dud Oscar duds.
Sandra Bullock proved the evening’s best charmer, giving a lengthy but truly congenial speech while accepting her award for Favorite Comedy Actress. The Miss Congeniality star thanked “the people who invented the tweezer, the people who invented support pantyhose, and the inventor of the Wonderbra.”
Don’t look for Eminem to accept his award when the event is televised Wednesday (April 11) night, however. After escaping a jail sentence on Tuesday, the rapper was a no-show, and Blockbuster only taped the categories whose winners bothered to show up.
The most exciting moment of the night didn’t result from the opening of an envelope anyway, but from a televised interview backstage with Charlie’s Angels star Drew Barrymore. She and Tom Green are indeed hitched, the actress told Entertainment Tonight. “He is not pulling your leg, we are married,” Barrymore said on camera. “We were all there,” she continued, referring to her two fellow Angels. Barrymore said the wedding was “just a few weeks ago” and that the couple is “on our honeymoon right now.”
Green was also in attendance, to introduce a sore-throated Creed performance of “Higher,” while, for some reason, he hurled raw fruit and vegetables into the crowd. Other musical performances included “Stutter” by Joe featuring Mystikal, “Fall from Grace” by Stevie Nicks with Sheryl Crow, and “Can’t Fight the Moonlight” from the soundtrack to Coyote Ugly, by LeAnn Rimes, which won Favorite Song from a Movie.
Favorite male pop artist Ricky Martin opened the two-hour show with a performance of “Loaded” – the first half of which was filmed outside by the red carpet, the second an hour later inside. Memo to critics who complain about the GRAMMY Awards and Oscars being popularity contests: At least those awards aren’t voted on by 20 million unqualified patrons of a mammoth national video chain.
In fact, the need for a Blockbuster Entertainment Awards at all was a question on many minds, including presenter Paul Reiser. “They’re a store, but suddenly they’re an award-presenting institution,” said the comedian, biting the hand that hired him. “I’m proud to say that next year I’ll be presenting at Herb’s Liquor Mart music awards show.”
