Forgotten gems reissued for music connoisseurs

Every record collector’s library contains a handful of forgotten classics, great records mismanaged by labels and lost to the annals of history. In recent years, some specialty labels have started reissuing these records for new audiences. Among them, Hacktone Records, founded in 2005 by Rhino Records veterans David Gorman and Michael Nieves. “Our goal is not to cater to completists or to be a legacy label,” Gorman said. “We’re not putting out lost demos by famous acts or throwing a few bonus tracks on a well-known record and putting it back out.” Rather, they acquire the rights to lesser-known works… Read more »

Prince rocks Super Bowl halftime show

Phew! CBS got through the halftime show without a “wardrobe malfunction.” The Artist Formerly Known as a Munchkin of Wardrobe Dysfunction began by singing “Let’s Go Crazy,” but he didn’t. Prince, who became a Jehovah’s Witness in the mid-1990s, no longer wears yellow, butt-baring pants as he did at the 1991 MTV Video Music Awards (prompting Howard Stern’s send-up at the ’92 VMAs). The closest thing to a fashion statement Sunday night was an odd kerchief on his head. So the NFL had no repeat of the 2004 Janet Jackson/Justin Timberlake show, which happened the last time CBS broadcast the… Read more »

Record Companies Wary of Vanity Label Deals

With the music industry looking to cut costs amid lower profit margins, record companies see fewer incentives to investing in artist-run label projects. Twelve years ago, Madonna decided to apply the business instincts that made her a superstar toward finding and developing new acts for her own music label. Maverick Records flourished early on. It generated hits by the likes of Alanis Morissette and Prodigy, validating the decision by Warner Music to form a partnership with its biggest star. But Maverick’s good fortunes started to turn during the industrywide sales slump that began in 2000. The label-parent relationship soured, landing… Read more »

Charlotte Church Gaining $30M Trust Fund

Charlotte Church, the bright-eyed Welsh soprano who has sung for two U.S. presidents, the pope and Queen Elizabeth II, turned 18 on Saturday, meaning she now has control of her $30 million trust fund. Church – whose bursts of rebelliousness, family spats and a now-discarded boyfriend have become a tabloid soap opera – now faces the difficult transition from child prodigy to adult star. With more than 10 million records sold around the world, the singer’s financial future seems secure. But Church said she planned to leave most of the trust-fund money where it was, telling Britain’s GMTV television: “I… Read more »

Members Of Korn, Pumpkins, Wilco Scoring With Movie Music

Rockers want to act, actors want to rock. What are you gonna do? For musicians who lack thespian aspirations, though, scoring a movie seems to suffice. Following in the footsteps of everyone from Bob Dylan and Jon Bon Jovi to Björk and Peter Gabriel, bandleaders Jonathan Davis, Billy Corgan and Jeff Tweedy and solo act Badly Drawn Boy are scoring some points with the Hollywood crowd this summer. Korn singer Davis teamed up with film scoring veteran and ex-Oingo Boingo keyboardist Richard Gibbs for the soundtrack to “Queen of the Damned,” released earlier this year. The pair co-wrote and performed… Read more »

Oasis Turn To Heathens, Hedonism For Inspiration On New LP

Following waning U.S. album sales, Oasis should probably call on high for divine inspiration. Instead, the perverse Brits are naming their fifth record Heathen Chemistry. The album will come out in July, and the first single, “Hindu Times” – part of which sounds like a psychedelic spin-off of Robert Palmer’s “Addicted to Love” – will be released to radio in the next two weeks. A black-and-white video for the song was directed by Wiz, and features shots of the band onstage juxtaposed against images of a gun barrel, a sign flashing “pills or bombs,” and X-rays of vocalist Liam Gallagher,… Read more »

Mobb Deep On The Beef With Jay-Z

Queensbridge, New York-based rap duo Mobb Deep is set to release its fifth album, Infamy, on December 11. The set is the follow-up to the pair’s platinum-certified 1999 set, Murda Muzik. While the group is excited about the forthcoming release, they have also recently been involved in an ongoing beef with Jay-Z. The conflict rose to a new level during a Summer Jam event in New York when Jay-Z displayed on the big screen a picture of Mobb Deep member Prodigy as an adolescent dressed up in a Michael Jackson outfit while also attacking the rapper’s street credibility in a… Read more »

Maverick Recording Co. announces the signing of worldwide DJ phenomenon Paul Oakenfold to make his debut album as a solo recording artist. “We’re absolutely thrilled to be working with Paul,” said Guy Oseary, Maverick co-partner and CEO. “As a DJ, he’s the best at what he does, and we’re determined to help him reach the widest audience possible as an electronic artist.” While Maverick is best known as the label founded by Madonna, Oseary says Oakenfold’s signing fits the label’s history of bringing electronic music to a larger audience.
