Loud Mouth EPTiLLie Label: EJK Records Released: 03.08.19 Review by Emillie Marvel | March 8, 2019 at 12:00 PM
“Be strong little girl / Take on all the weight of the whole wide world”
Pop music is changing and TiLLie is at the head of the revolution. Say sayonara to the days of artificial beats and lackluster lyrics and welcome in a new age. An age of girl power, of confidence, of killer guitar solos.
TiLLie’s new EP Loud Mouth kicks off with “faith”. The track breaks us in with a slow beat that quickly morphs into the ultimate singalong. You’ll be boppin’ along to this one for months to come, partly because it’s a good song and partly because it’s one of those pop chants you’ll never truly be able to get out of your head. Still, the song has the grit that seems to be TiLLie’s calling card.
Bubblegum pop balanced with a riot girl attitude shows itself again on the undeniably fun “mood swings”. With a childlike beat that almost had us breaking out our old Claire’s makeup (thanks for the heads up, FDA) and lyrics that are, well, anything but childlike, this song will be your best friend the next time you dye your hair out of pure frustration. (Hey, we’ve all been there.)
While you were reading this review we were petitioning for the final song “whole wide world” to become the official soundtrack to feminism. TiLLie starts by reminiscing about being told she wasn’t “as strong as her big brother”. We think it’s safe to say she’s proven every outdated, misogynistic stereotype wrong but if you need reassurance we’ll direct you to the chorus. She declares that no matter your size, speed, or gender, it’s totally possible to take on the weight of the world in order to make it a better place.
With Loud Mouth, TiLLie is giving us the freedom to listen to catchy pop tunes and feel badass while doing it. She’s broadcasting the message that now, in 2019, you can be whatever the hell you want to be—and you can make a lot of noise when you get there.
Stream it, Buy It, Skip It?: Buy it, we all could use a little more girl power in our collections.
