V1The Ready Set Label: Independent Released: 03.16.18 Review by Emillie Marvel | March 15, 2018 at 1:00 PM
“Your friends are long gone / but I’m still here”
Spring is here, the mood is bright, and so is The Ready Set’s new music. The first of two EPs, V1 is full of electropop that’ll put a smile on your face and lyric captions on your Instagram photos. We dive back into the world called TRS with “No Halos”. The peppiest song on the collection, frontman/producer/all around badass Jordan Witzigreuter reintroduces us to his killer lyric style. Will some of these lines end up tattooed on our body? Probably. (Looking at you, “Maybe growing up means nothing.”)
Lyrics aren’t the only repeat delighter on V1, though. The entire collection is a throwback to Jordan’s last release… and the one before that… and the one before that. The calling card of a TRS album is that you know exactly what you’re in for. He’s the king of synthpop beats and songs that feel like sunshine itself, and he doesn’t abandon his trademarks on his latest EP. Rather than experimenting with genres, he just keeps making his sound better.
Back to the tracklist. We see more happy beats and smooth melodies on “Feeling Something”, but it’s “Real” that captures the vision of V1 completely. It’s catchy, it’s fun, it’s lyrically a little sad, but that’s okay because TRS has us in such a good mood we don’t even notice.
This review wouldn’t be complete without a shoutout to lead single “Life In Pink”. It’s Jordan’s most refined piece of work yet and deserves to be in an art museum somewhere. We just can’t get enough of the perfect balance of pop and electronic, happy and heavy, and melodic and infectious, so we’ll have to start living our lives in pink just to honor it.
With V1, Jordan proved that although The Ready Set has a habit of disappearing, each time he revives the project, it only gets better. There’s already news of another EP on the way, and we can’t wait to see how stellar things are gonna get.
Buy It, Stream It, Skip It: Buy it. There’s no better collection to have on your shelf this spring.
