Jay-Z, More Support Musiq At Release Party

With those sunglasses he wears all the time, it’s sometimes hard to read Musiq. Except when he’s onstage. He can’t keep from smiling; he obviously loves what he’s doing. Wednesday night at B.B. King’s in New York City, the Soulchild held his album release party for Juslisen, which drops next Tuesday. Unlike most shindigs of this nature, Musiq didn’t just play cuts from his LP for attendees such as Jay-Z, Angie Stone, Capone and Bilal – the 24-year-old and his band played cuts. Before the main attraction came onto the stage, the Roots’ Black Thought warmed things up with his… Read more »

Inside The White Stripes' 'Girl' Video Block Party

Remember how psyched you were as a kid to build a little car or a castle out of Lego pieces? Bet you never fashioned a fully functioning punk-rock duo and a kaleidoscopic world where they could swim, ride bikes and whale on the drums, though, did you? Don’t feel bad. You probably never got that sophisticated, but pioneering director Michel Gondry did, thanks to the White Stripes. In the eye-popping video for “Fell in Love With a Girl,” a two-minute blast of O.P.P.-like fantasy, the candy-colored pair from Detroit strum, jump and sprint their way through a building-block realm that… Read more »

Gym Turns Pink's 'Party' Moves Into Calorie-Burning Class

Sure, Pink’s ability to get a party started is widely known, but now it turns out she also has the power to get people in shape. “Get Your Body Started,” an hour-long hip-hop dance/aerobics class based on Pink’s choreography, begins this month at all 400 North American Bally Total Fitness centers, running through July and maybe longer, depending on how it’s received. While the name of the class is based on Pink’s popular single, “It’s not just ‘Get the Party Started’ over and over again, as much as our members would like that,” Bally spokesperson Jon Harris said. Instructors play… Read more »

Mick Jagger, once the wild man of rock, says that at the age of 58 he has given up on drink, drugs and partying. No Doubt Make Party Music

No Doubt began as a good-time ska-party band, full of California sunshine. But in the last few years, that’s been obscured by smog: bruised egos within the band, gloomy lyrics and weak record sales for last year’s Return of Saturn. The bad times are all gone on their upcoming album, Rock Steady, reports singer Gwen Stefani. “We’re not taking ourselves so seriously,” she says. “It’s like, get over it. We’re a fucking band and we’re really lucky to be doing what we do.” Rock Steady, out December 18th, is a sweet pop confection, made with arrays of keyboards, a dance-floor… Read more »

MTV Marks 20th Birthday With Party

In the years since August 1, 1981, when MTV first went on air by broadcasting a song presciently called “Video Killed the Radio Star,” the cable channel has helped to turn musicians as different as Duran Duran, Guns ‘N’ Roses, Tupac Shakur, Marilyn Manson, and Britney Spears into cultural touchstones. MTV helped to mainstream rap music and to pioneer the trend toward reality television with shows like The Real World. And the channel has been at the center of any number of pop culture brouhahas, whether involving cartoon bad boys Beavis and Butt-head, sexually provocative and spiritually outrageous videos by… Read more »
